Ezra Klein appeared on PJ Vogt’s fantastic Search Engine podcast to explain the “healthy” way to follow election news cycle. In this clip, he’s discussing how public statements are far more revealing than private ones. In public people are trying to co-opt a broader audience. Hence giving you insight into their political goals.

Moral Hazard

Planet Money is a great podcast to learn about many different concepts in economics. The clip here is addressing the concept of Moral Hazard. Like many other economics terms, it doesn’t mean anything you, as an normal English speaker, would infer.

“Moral Hazard” is when risk is taken by someone that does not have to face its consequences. It is a concept in insurance literature. Usually to describe the factor of a person to engage in risky behavior.

This past summer, the world had a catastrophic failure of cyber infrastructure. And it was not due to some attack by a malicious actor. But sheer incompetence from a boring business that no one even knew the name. CrowdStrike. They are a vendor of cyber-security software for enterprises. The fact that one single point of ineptitude can cause such massive disruption is a cause for concern.

But what if CrowdStrike had wanted to cause this? This is the scenario Cory Doctorow lays out in this clip. Imagine if a US court orders this firm to shutdown an airline or bank in a foreign country. They will have to comply. The global digital infrastructure is based on a facade of a borderless world. The masks is slowly, but surely coming off.
